Chelsea are considering signing Roma defender Antonio Rudiger to improve their defence for next season.

The Blues are determined to strengthen the back four and have been looking at a number of players, including John Stones, Kostas Manolas, Leonardo Bonucci, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marquinhos.

At £19.5million Rudiger, who is in Germany’s Euro 2016 squad, is the cheapest option of the group.

The 23-year-old spent this season on loan at Roma from Stuttgart, with a clause in place to make the deal permanent at the end of the campaign for £7m.

Roma exercised their option this week but are prepared to sell the defender if they can make a significant profit.

The Serie A club would prefer to cash in on Rudiger rather than lose team-mate Manolas, who is also wanted by Arsenal and Manchester United.

Rudiger made his senior international debut in 2014 and has been capped 10 times by Germany.
