Napoli have confirmed that Chelsea summer transfer target Kalidou Koulibaly has signed a new long-term contract with the club until 2021.
Standard Sport revealed in the transfer window that Chelsea were keen on signing the 25-year-old centre-back, but Napoli were desperate for the defender to sign a new deal to stay in Serie A for at least one more season.
Koulibaly had his sights set on a move to Stamford Bridge, but a transfer never materialised as Chelsea instead concluded a shock £34million deal to bring David Luiz back to London from Paris Saint-Germain.
Napoli had hoped that including a £60 clause in Koulibaly's contract - as well as a verbal agreement that they will sell in 2017 if a big offer comes in - would be a compromise for both parties.
The Senegal international has now signed a new long-term deal at the club, with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis releasing a statement on Twitter which read: "I'm happy to announce that Kalidou Koulibaly has signed a new contract extension with Napoli untill 2021."
No mention of a release clause was made on either Napoli's official Twitter account or their website.
Chelsea had been considering meeting Koulibaly's initial asking price of £60m, which would have set a new club record in beating the £50m they paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011.
Napoli have consistently proven to be tough negotiators in recent seasons and their stance paid off last month when Juventus spent £75.3m on striker Gonzalo Higuain.
Should Napoli end up selling Koulibaly in future, they are set to make a huge profit given that they bought him from Genk for just £7m in 2014.
