Chelsea’s conquerors hit by UEFA sanctions

11 September 2012

UEFA have withheld Atletico Madrid’s prize money from this season’s Europa League while investigating the club for breaching Financial Fair Play rules.

The sanctions against Atletico, who won the Europa League last season and beat Chelsea 4-1 in the European Super Cup, are a result of overdue payments of transfer fees, wages and taxes.

Malaga, Fenerbahce and Sporting Lisbon are also being investigated but there are no British clubs on the list of 23 clubs whose prize money from this season’s Champions League or Europa League could be stopped.

The list of offending clubs was drawn up by Jean-Luc Dehaene, the former prime minister of Belgium, who heads the panel appointed by UEFA to prosecute financial fair play cases.

The clubs have until September 30 to provide an updated situation.
