Michy Batshuayi had to be stretchered off the field during Borussia Dortmund’s Ruhr derby defeat to Schalke after suffering an injury that could place his World Cup participation in doubt.

Chelsea loanee Batshuayi departed in the 92nd minute after a challenge with Benjamin Stambouli left him with an ankle injury.

Reports in Germany claimed that Batshuayi was taken to hospital with local Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper reporting that he had in fact broken his ankle, and Peter Stoger admitted he feared the Belgian striker had suffered a serious injury.

"I didn't think it looked like the kind of injury that he would be back from quickly," the Dortmund head coach said. "I hope, of course, that I'm mistaken.

"I can't yet say anything specific, other than the fact that he's in pain and will now be examined in more detail.

"Hopefully it's not as bad as it looks."

Batshuayi has been in superb form since joining Dortmund on loan in January, scoring nine goals in 14 appearances
