Chelsea maintain innocence in row over signing prodigy Nathan Ake

11 April 2012

Chelsea insisted today they have done nothing wrong in signing 15-year-old Nathan Ake from Feyenoord.

The Dutch club are furious after the defender, who has progressed impressively through the youth ranks since the age of 12, turned down their offer of a professional contract to join Chelsea instead.

The Blues have agreed around £228,000 in compensation but that has done little to pacify Feyenoord's sporting director Leo Beenhakker.

He said "What can you do? English clubs are the great white sharks of football. Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are all in the game. We had a wonderful deal for Nathan, but the lad wanted only one thing: Chelsea. It's game over for us.

"I've discussed this matter with Nathan and his parents. He told me he really wanted to move to England and his parents were okay with that.

"We can't do anything about it if a foreign club comes up to sign one of our youngsters. The Premier League clubs spoil the market with their behaviour. Other clubs in Europe aren't doing this kind of thing, but the English sides just don't care."

It has been reported that Feyenoord are considering complaining to FIFA but a Chelsea spokesman said: "We have kept Feyenoord abreast of our interest and as such we have reached an agreement with them."

Last year Chelsea were found guilty by FIFA of inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens in 2007 only for the Court of Arbitration for Sport to clear them on appeal. The forward, 19, has just signed a new four-and-a-half year contract.
