A Chelsea Legends side including Gianfranco Zola and Michael Ballack lost 4-1 to an Inter Milan Legends team at Stamford Bridge in a game dedicated to the late Ray Wilkins.

Wilkins, who captained Chelsea and worked as an assistant manager during two different spells at the club, died in early April after suffering a heart attack at his home.

Some of the footballers who either played under or with Wilkins at Chelsea and other clubs were invited to Stamford Bridge to take part in a charity game, with proceeds going to the Chelsea Foundation to Crohn's and Colitis UK.

And the 28,155 fans that turned up to the stadium, just one day before the FA Cup final, were treated to a goal-fest of a game which began when Roberto Di Matteo scored the opener for Chelsea Legends in only the fourth minute.

After latching onto the ball in midfield, the Italian sent a low, powerful shot hurtling into the back of the net.

Former Chelsea goalkeeper, and current Blues coach, Carlo Cudicini then made a superb stop to deny Giorgos Karagounis at his near post but Inter did eventually get their equaliser when Marco Materazzi headed in a cross after 21 minutes.

Despite Cudicini - who was later named Man of the Match - making three more impressive saves, he could not prevent the Italian side from taking the lead shortly before the break when Esteban Cambiasso flicked on the ball, which David Suazo drove in.

Chelsea thought they had restored parity but Sebastien Frey saved Eidur Gudjohnsen's close-range shot in the second half.

But Karagounis scored a further two times to seal a 4-1 win for Inter against Chelsea, 20 years on from the Blues lifting the League Cup, Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup and the Italian side winning the Uefa Cup.
