Chelsea hope to reach deal over David Luiz

Bridge target: David Luiz in action for Brazil
11 April 2012

Chelsea have made signing Benfica defender David Luiz their top priority following the sale of Ricardo Carvalho to Real Madrid.

A fee of £6.7million has been agreed for Carvalho although the deal is still subject to him passing a medical and agreeing terms.

Carvalho's departure will leave Chelsea short of cover at the back with John Terry, Alex and Branislav Ivanovic the squad's only experienced central defenders.

Chelsea are unwilling to meet the £27m asking price for Luiz but still hope a deal can be struck.
