Marc Guehi is excited to make a name for himself at Crystal Palace after leaving his Chelsea "family" behind this summer.

After a year on loan with Swansea in the Championship last season, the defender sat down with his family and made the decision that a permanent move away from Chelsea - the club he joined at seven - was the best thing to do this summer.

Guehi - who was this week named captain of the England U21s - completed an £18million switch to Crystal Palace, where behind the scenes he is viewed as perhaps their most exciting addition in a seismic summer.

Becoming a starter in the Premier League makes the move more than worthwhile for Guehi, but leaving Chelsea behind proved a difficult decision.

"The fact that I had been there for so long and known practically no other place than Chelsea," said Guehi.

"I had grown up at Chelsea, been there since the age of seven and gone through the ranks. So many people there have helped me get to this point. It was family orientated place that I really felt a part of.

"To leave was a tough decision but I am grateful for the opportunity that Palace presented me. To be a Palace player now is fantastic and to be in the Premier League is even better."

There has been plenty of change at Selhurst Park over the summer. Since Patrick Vieira replaced Roy Hodgson in the dugout nine senior faces have left with a raft of younger players coming in the door, including Guehi.

Some of the more senior players to remain are making settling in south London easy for Guehi, but there is plenty of excitement around what can be done with this new look group.

"There are a lot of established players that are already there so they make it easy for us new boys coming in," said the 21-year-old.

"I am not the only one coming in so there are a few and you're not the only one getting used to a new environment and place. It is really exciting, getting to know other people and their backgrounds. I am really excited for the future."
