Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah wanted by RB Leipzig as Wesley Fofana pursuit continues

RB Leipzig have joined the race to sign Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

The Bundesliga outfit are experiencing something of a defensive crisis following the recent injury sustained by Germany’s Lukas Klostermann and are keen to recruit a new centre-half who is adept at playing as part of a three-man backline.

Standard Sport understands that Leipzig want to sign Chalobah on loan, having previously negotiated the successful return of Timo Werner to the Red Bull Arena in a £25million deal last month.

Serie A duo Inter Milan and Roma are also chasing the 23-year-old, whom Chelsea would be willing to loan out if they manage to sign a new central defender before next Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

The Blues remain in pursuit of Wesley Fofana, having seen a third bid for his services worth up to £70m rejected on Tuesday as Leicester hold out for what would be a world-record fee for a defender.

Tottenham also hold an interest in Chalobah, but Chelsea do not want to sell him on a permanent deal.

A graduate of Chelsea’s academy who has been with the club since the age of eight, Chalobah, under contract until 2026 after signing a new deal last November, spent time on loan at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient before breaking into the senior setup at Stamford Bridge.

He was used often by Thomas Tuchel at the beginning of last season, but has started just 10 matches during 2022 so far and fears that the arrival of a new defender such as Fofana would force him further down the pecking order in west London.

The decision over Chalobah’s future could impact Chelsea team-mate Ethan Ampadu, who has offers from Serie A duo Empoli and Spezia plus other suitors from around Europe.

If Chalobah were to follow Werner to the Bundesliga, he would likely be joining team-mate Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is close to signing for Bayer Leverkusen on loan after rejecting the likes of Newcastle, Southampton and Borussia Dortmund.
