Kepa Arrizabalaga proved the penalty shootout hero for Chelsea as they won a tense shootout against Villarreal to seal a Uefa Super Cup triumph in Belfast.

Chelsea player ratings

Edouard Mendy 7

His brilliant save denied Dia an equaliser when getting out and down quickly to cut out the danger. Twice saved by his post – on the second occasion when getting his finger tips to Moreno’s shot after his own error.

Callum Hudson-Odoi 6

Got forward on plenty of occasions to put Chelsea in promising positions. His delivery could have been better on a couple of occasions.

Trevoh Chalobah 7

Pushed forward well to support Hudson-Odoi as Chelsea dominated the ball. Some really positive defending as Villarreal put pressure on in the second half

Toni Rudiger 7

Aggressive and dominant in the first half, but put under significantly more as Villarreal took control after the break.

Kurt Zouma 7

Stood firm in the face of Villarreal pressure. Notable that the Spaniards’ equaliser came after he left the pitch.

Marcos Alonso 8

Looked like a man with a point to prove. Villarreal could not handle his energy or aggression. Involved in Chelsea’s brightest moves – including Ziyech’s goal.

N’Golo Kante 7

Kante was just being Kante when stopping one early break from Villarreal on the edge of the box. Slipped straight back into the form he showed at the end of last season.

Mateo Kovacic 6

Just kept winning the ball back time and again to put Chelsea on the front foot. Struggled to show the same dominance after the break.

Hakim Ziyech 7

The best player on the pitch until his injury. Fired Chelsea ahead and created golden chances for Alonso and Zouma before hurting his shoulder.

Kai Havertz 7

This might be last time he is asked to play centrally as Lukaku arrives at Stamford Bridge. But he certainly brings qualities in that position and it was his intelligent movement and cross that set up  Ziyech’s goal.

Timo Werner 5

Forced early save to get his confidence up. Ran down blind alleys on occasion too, but never stopped trying to find space.

Substitutes

Kepa (Mendy, 119) 10

A masterstroke from Tuchel to bring him on at the death in a bid to be the shootout hero - and he didn’t disappoint. Two saves handed Chelsea the Super Cup and their first piece of silverware of the season.

Christian Pulisic (Ziyech, 43) 5

Did not have the same impact as Ziyech and should have done better with a close-range effort in extra time.

Jorginho (Kante, 65) 6

Began to gain control as the game went on to stem Villarreal’s attacks.

Mason Mount (Werner, 65) 6

Threatened to find a winner in extra time, but denied by Asenjo.

Andreas Christensen (Zouma, 66) 6

Almost immediately saw Moreno fire an equaliser, but settled after that.

Cesar Azpilicueta (Hudson-Odoi, 82) 5

Provided needed energy on the right.

Subs not used: Chilwell, Emerson, James, Thiago Silva, Loftus-Cheek, Abraham.
