Chelsea and Mason Mount put contract talks on hold with no agreement close

Mason Mount and Chelsea have agreed to put contract renewal talks on hold until after the World Cup.

The 23-year-old has had several rounds of discussions with new co-owner Todd Boehly but has not yet come close to agreeing on new terms and is now with the England squad in Qatar.

Both sides will re-open negotiations after the World Cup, but there is work to do with his current deal expiring in 2024.

Boehly is personally leading talks with Chelsea’s two-time player of the year, who the American has privately acknowledged is vastly underpaid.

Mount has one of the lowest wages in the Chelsea squad and any new deal would make him one of the highest-paid players at Stamford Bridge.

There is pressure on the new Boehly-Clearlake regime, with one of their most valuable stars entering the final 18 months of his deal.

The new owners are frustrated they have taken over a club with contracts for N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Thiago Silva expiring next summer, and Mount, Christian Pulisic, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek out of contract a year later.

After completing their takeover last summer, the new owners quickly moved to secure Reece James’s future on a £250,000-a-week six-year deal in September.

That contract was agreed at unprecedented speed but other renewals will not be so quick.
