Gary Lineker says Chelsea will "never learn" as news broke that Frank Lampard was being sacked on Monday morning.

The club legend was dimissed after a poor run of form saw them slump from top spot to ninth despite a summer of heavy spending.

A run of five defeats in eight Premier League games was enough for club owner Roman Abramovich to dismiss Lampard halfway through a three-year contract.

"Reports that Frank Lampard will be sacked by [Chelsea] today.

"Utterly ludicrous after his first bad run. It was always going to need time given so many new signings feeling their way into a new club.

"Patience being a virtue is seldom recognised in this sport. They never learn."

Abramovich has hired and fired 14 different managers since his arrival in 2003, with Thomas Tuchel expected to become the 15th new face in the Stamford Bridge dugout.

The Russian owner made the rare decision to make a public statement explaining Lampard’s sacking.
