Charlton sack Phil Parkinson as new owners get ruthless

Bidding farewell: Phil Parkinson

Phil Parkinson was sacked by Charlton today, just four days after a takeover of the club.

Charlton's new chairman Michael Slater was at The Valley yesterday as the club slumped to a 4-2 defeat against Swindon.

Manager Parkinson criticised the team for a "lack of desire" but he has paid the price for a poor run, which has seen them win just one of their last eight games.

Slater said: "Clearly improvement is needed on the field. The team have not won in the League since November and recent performances have simply not been good enough."

Despite their stuttering form, Charlton are fifth in League One — three points off second spot.

Slater added: "Last night's defeat convinced us, as a board, that change is required now while we are still in the hunt for promotion and that we must appoint a new manager to give us every chance of going up."

The club's new board includes Tony Jimenez, who was formerly Newcastle's head of recruitment, and his connections to Dennis Wise — they worked together at St James' Park — raised speculation last week that the former Chelsea midfielder was being lined up as manager.

Charlton insisted yesterday that was the not case but Parkinson's dismissal has put Wise's name in the frame.

Parkinson took charge at The Valley in November 2008, when he replaced Alan Pardew but was unable to keep the team in the Championship.

Last season Charlton lost to Swindon on penalties in the play‑off semi-finals.
