Lee Bowyer is “one or two small adjustments” away from agreeing a new contract at Charlton after further talks with the club's new owners on Thursday morning.

Bowyer spoke to chairman Matt Southall and said: “We are nearly there. Just one or two small adjustments. I have had some good, positive conversations and I am pleased with what I’m hearing.”

The 43-year-old is in the final six months of his deal and was a target for Cardiff at the end of last year but wants to take Charlton back to the Premier League.

"I wouldn’t say I’m relieved [to have it sorted], but I’m happy because I want to be part of this club moving forward and that’s been obvious from day one," Bowyer added.

"Like I said, me and my team have worked hard and I think that we deserved to be treated the same as other people in other clubs, so that’s all we’ve ever asked for and it looks like that’s going to happen."

19th-placed Charlton claimed a spirited 2-2 draw against promotion favourites West Brom last weekend, but have now won just one of their last 15 Championship matches.

They return to action on Saturday with a trip to face play-off chasers Preston North End at Deepdale.
