Charlton manager Lee Bowyer revealed his surprise after his side signed Josh Cullen from West Ham on a season-long loan.

Midfielder Cullen, 22, spent the first half of last season on loan with Championship side Bolton, while he played more than 40 games for Bradford in League One two years ago.

“This is one we thought would be out of our reach to be honest,” said Bowyer, who made Cullen his top target after Jake Forster-Caskey suffered a season-ending knee injury.

“He is a very good player and has good experience in this league.

“He is definitely one who is going to improve us. He has been in and around the West Ham squad in pre-season.

“The new manager there [Manuel Pellegrini] likes him and that is why I thought he was not going to get out of there and if he did, he would go to the Championship.”
