Charlie Austin has admitted that staying at QPR is likely to cost him a place in England's Euro 2016 squad.

The 26-year-old striker enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in the Premier League last season and scored 18 goals; a tally only bettered by Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane and Diego Costa.

However, although the forward's efforts earned him a first England call up in May, he could not save Rangers from relegation to the second tier.

A summer of uncertainty ensued during the transfer window and Austin eventually decided to stay at Loftus Road, despite receiving offers from elsewhere.

The striker has now resigned himself to miss out when Roy Hodgson chooses who to take to France next summer as it is unlikely the Croydon-born manager will consider those in the Championship for selection.

"The move was not right for me in the summer, I decided to stay at QPR," he told BBC Wiltshire "Of course you have ambitions, but I have to be realistic and take it one step at a time.

"I know the Euros are at the end of the season but the likelihood now is that I'm not going to be involved in that squad."

However, Austin is adamant that the situation at international level will not affect his club form and has vowed to fire the west London club to promotion

"That does not mean that I am not going to try and score as many goals as I can for QPR because our main aim is to get promoted.

"I believe we should be in the top six and if we fail to get in the top six it has not been a successful season."

Austin has scored six goals in eight Championship appearances for Chris Ramsey's in the opening weeks of the season.
