Harry Kane has urged Tottenham to believe they can deliver one of their most famous victories by beating Real Madrid in the Spanish capital next month.

Spurs face the Champions League holders - who have won the trophy in three of the past four seasons - at the Bernabeu on October 17, with both teams trying to maintain their 100 per cent record in Group H.

Kane scored a hat-trick - his sixth of the year - to help Tottenham defeat APOEL on Tuesday night.

Next, though, comes the greatest test for Mauricio Pochettino’s team, against some of the best players in the world - including Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who both scored in Real’s 3-1 win at Borussia Dortmund last night.

Kane insisted: “We feel we can beat anyone on our day. We are going there to win, not just to avoid defeat.

“It will probably come down to who is more clinical in the final third and, hopefully, that can be us. I want to test myself against the best - and they have been the best team in the last few years, without a doubt.

“I have never been to the Bernabeu, so it is going to be exciting, and I want to put in the sort of performances I have managed recently. They have one of the best defences in the world, too.

“I have never met Ronaldo but I am a fan, of course. I am a fan of all great footballers and he is one of the best, especially from my generation. Hopefully, we can win and maybe I can score more goals than him.

“We have managed to win our first two games in the Champions League and that is vital. Hopefully, we can get through to the last 16 as quickly as possible.”

Kane has nine goals in his past five matches and five in his last two in the Champions League. He had six shots against the Cypriot champions last night and scored with three of them for his first Champions League treble and his ninth for Tottenham.

Greater challenges lie ahead, but if they can keep Kane fit, Tottenham have a finisher like few others.

“I’d say this is the most confident I have felt,” added the 24-year-old. “I’ve scored quite a few (nine) goals in September and there is another game left this month, at Huddersfield on Saturday.

“The more I play, the more I get a sense of what defenders will do at certain times, which is part of becoming more mature. As you get older and wiser, things come naturally. I was pleased with my finishing against APOEL and, hopefully, I can take it into the next few games.”

Meanwhile, Tottenham and West Ham were today charged by the FA for failing to control their players in Saturday’s match.

Spurs won the derby at the London Stadium 3-2 but almost squandered a three-goal lead.

The Hammers were pressing for an equaliser in stoppage time when a melee occurred. The clubs have until 6pm on Thursday to respond.
