Cesc Fabregas has named his dream five-a-side team of former teammates, with Barcelona, Arsenal and Spain stars all making the cut – but none from his time at Chelsea.
Fabregas has been part of some of the most celebrated in teams in recent football history, making his Arsenal debut as a teenager during the legendary Invincibles season before returning to boyhood club Barcelona to be part of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering side.
He was also an integral member of the Spain side that dominated international football between 2008-12, winning two European Championships and the World Cup.
Speaking to former Arsenal teammate Thierry Henry in an Instagram Q&A, the 33-year-old opted for the captain of that side, Iker Casillas, as his goalkeeper.
“For what we experienced together and the big moments we had together,” he explained. “We’ve had so many amazing moments together with Spain.”
He unsurprisingly went for fellow La Masia graduate Lionel Messi in attack, alongside Henry, before completing his line-up with two midfielders.
“David Silva,” he added. “I always had this understanding with him, these players they don’t talk about as the best in the world, but I always had a special feeling with him. [Andres] Iniesta and Silva are the two players I always felt ‘Wow, I’m enjoying this so much’.
“Iniesta and David Silva have to be there for me – I know I’m not playing with any defenders but I will go with one goalkeeper that will save everything.”
