Caring side give Powell optimism

11 April 2012

The relief was clear from Chris Powell after Charlton put their nightmare run behind them to fight back and draw 1-1 with in-form Southampton at The Valley.

Trailing to Radhi Jaidi's 64th‑minute drive, Charlton levelled late on when former Saint Bradley Wright-Phillips slotted in.

The hosts had lost seven of their last eight games and manager Powell said: 'I won't lie - we've had a bit of soul searching and I just wanted a performance to show we cared. To a man, against a top team, we stood up to the challenge."

Danny N'Guessan thought he had scored the winner for the Saints only for it be ruled offside. Their boss Nigel Adkins said: "It was a perfectly good goal."
