Bury captain Neil Danns has accused owner Steve Dale of “literally destroying lives” with his running of the club.

The League One side were expelled from the Football League yesterday after a takeover bid collapsed. They are the first club to drop out of the EFL since Maidstone and Aldershot in 1992.

Asked by TalkSPORT if he had a message for the Bury owner, Danns said: “I’d say, look what you’ve done.

“This should never have happened. If you thought you could not move this club forward in a positive way, you should never have taken over because you’ve literally destroyed lives, because that’s what this club meant to so many fans.”

The EFL, who have come under fire over their handling of the situation, said in a statement last night: “We have worked determinedly and tirelessly to avoid this outcome and it is with a heavy heart that this situation has been forced upon us.”

The governing body were under fire again this morning after giving Bolton, who also face the threat of expulsion, an extension to September 12 to find a buyer or prove they have the funds to complete the season.

James Frith, MP for Bury North, told the BBC: “Now we’re in a situation where Bolton gets two weeks’ [notice] served in the same situation Bury is now at. Where is the consistency here? It is wholly, wholly inadequate.”

The EFL have argued throughout that the cases of Bury and Bolton were substantially different.
