Tottenham’s hopes of claiming one of the top flight’s lucrative Champions League seem all but over after a goalless draw away to Burnley.
In truth, Spurs were perhaps fortunate to leave Turf Moor with even a single point after a lacklustre showing from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Danny Ings was denied twice by Michel Vorm, deputising for the injured Hugo Lloris, in a first half that Burnley shaded, but neither side mounted a considerable threat on goal.
Having picked up a knock in the dying moments of the first half, England international Kyle Walker was unable to continue in the second, and was replaced by Ben Davies moments after the restart. One of two changes made by Pochettino.
Erik Lamela’s second half introduction did little to add some much-needed impetuous to Spurs’ play, and the Tottenham’s attacking exploits were summed up by a dismal effort from Paulinho just after the hour mark.
The clean sheet recorded by Vorm was the club’s first in the Premier League for nine matches, offering the faintest of silver linings for Pochettino.
Spurs now trail fourth-placed Manchester City by seven points, with their hopes of securing a spot in next season’s Champions League all but over.
For Burnley, the draw was yet another point taken off the league’s premier sides, following on from their surprise victory over Manchester City in their last outing at Turf Moor, and takes Sean Dyche’s side level with Sunderland in 17th place.
