Bundesliga action will return at the beginning of May as league officials put plans in place for football to return as the country continues to battle the coronavirus pandemic.
Football in Germany was suspended on March 13 with sport effectively brought to a halt across the planet in efforts to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.
Players from the 18 Bundesliga teams have this week resumed training however, with champions Bayern Munich among the teams back on the pitch training in groups of five with no contact.
And in an interview with The New York Times, Bundesliga chief executive Christian Seifert revealed plans for football in the country’s top two divisions to resume in May with the view of the 2019-20 season finishing by the end of June.
Games will be played behind closed doors however with stadiums to remain empty until the end of 2020, according to Seifert.
“We are part of the culture in the country, people long to get back a short piece of normal life, and that could mean the Bundesliga plays again,” Seifert said.
“This is why we have to play our role here, and that means to support the government and to talk with the government about when we will be able to play again.”
Germany has the fifth-highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, with over 107,000 to date.
