Rene Meulensteen today confirmed that Bryan Ruiz has been given permission to speak to a number of clubs ahead of a potential loan deal until the end of the season.

Ruiz, who was signed from FC Twente for £10.6million in 2011, has started just one game since Meulensteen replaced Martin Jol at Craven Cottage.

The Costa Rica forward, 28, has been linked with a move to Real Betis and Meulensteen said: “We have allowed Bryan to talk to a number of clubs to see if something can come out of that. He is a very good player but he has got a World Cup coming up and I can understand that he wants to play. I can’t guarantee that. There is some contact in Spain and Holland could be another option.”

Meulensteen is confident of keeping hold of Dimitar Berbatov amid interest from Arsenal. The Fulham boss said: “He is a Fulham player and a very important player for us. He has quality and experience. He can do things that make him stand out from others. He is an exceptional player.”
