Arsene Wenger admitted he was ‘sad’ to learn of Brendan Rodgers’ sacking as Liverpool manager after his Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United.

Rodgers’s contract was terminated just hours after Liverpool 1-1 with Everton in the Merseyside Derby, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his future at Anfield.

Wenger, too, has hardly been out of the firing line in recent weeks.

While the Gunners boss may be celebrating his nineteenth year at the helm, he conceded that there’s always ‘big pressure’ on Premier League managers, before backing Rodgers to bounce back.

“I’m always sad when that happens,” said Wenger in his post-match press conference.

“He’s a quality manager. Unfortunately the pressure is always bigger on the managers. I think what he has done at Liverpool, he was very unlucky not to win the premiership, he was the closest. But that’s the way it goes now. I wish him good luck. I’m sure he’ll find a job again.
