Sergio Ramos helped to break Atletico Madrid's hearts in a Champions League final once again as the Real Madrid captain scored en route to a dramatic penalty shootout victory in Saturday's San Siro final, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the vital spot-kick.

Ramos scored the late equaliser to force extra-time in the 2014 final, with Real going on to beat their fierce rivals 4-1 - and the defender scored another vital goal to help earn Real their 11th European Cup success this time around.

Atletico played a dangerous game early on, conceding a number of free kicks in their own half as they loked to rough up Real's forwards early on.

Atleti goalkeeper Jan Olbak made a stunning save with his foot to prevent Casemiro opening the scoring from close range for Zinedine Zidane's men seven minutes in.

But Real kept up the pressure and another set-piece soon made the difference, with Gareth Bale heading on Toni Kros' whipped delivery from the left flank to allow Ramos to get the merest of flicks and beat Oblak after 15 minutes.

Diego Simeone's side struggled to find a rhythm in the first half and failed to seriously trouble Keylor Navas, but improved markedly after the interval with the introduction of Yannick Carrasco for Augusto Fernandez.

Atleti pressed forward in waves and soon had the ideal chance to equalise just a minute after half-time, with Pepe conceding a penalty for a foolish lunge on Fernando Torres.

Real keeper Navas was booked by Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg for timewasting, but it seemed to do the trick as Antoine Griezmann blasted his spot-kick down the middle and off the bar to safety.

Despite that setback, Simeone's side continued to look for an equaliser - and they had Oblak to thank for a few more crucial saves to keep them in the game as Real caught their Madrid rivals on the counter.

Former Tottenham star Gareth Bale had a great chance to win the game after a goalmouth scramble, but his goalbound shot was cleared near the line after he turned Oblak - and Atleti immediately made Real pay.

Atletico raced forward down the right, and Juanfran teed up a perfect cross for substitute Carrasco to thump home from close range at the back post 12 minutes from time.

Neither side could find a way through in extra-time as the likes of Bale and Koke needed treatment for injuries, meaning tyhe game went to penalties.

Griezmann held his nerve this time around to send Navas the wrong way, but Juanfran missed to allow Ronaldo to win the cup.
