Avram Grant rules out Chelsea return and tells fans to support Rafael Benitez

Avram Grant said he has not been asked to return to Chelsea and believes good football will convince Blues fans to back interim manager Rafael Benitez.

Benitez has faced an angry reaction from the Stamford Bridge crowd during the opening games of his reign since replacing Roberto di Matteo.

Grant himself has been touted for a return to the club, with owner Roman Abramovich reportedly keen to bring him back as an adviser to the Spaniard.

"No-one from Chelsea offered me this job," Grant told the BBC. "We didn’t talk about this thing. This is not important. What’s important is that Chelsea have a manager and the club need to support him and not look for any other things."

Chelsea became the first Champions League holders to exit at the group stage, despite a 6-1 in over Nordsjaelland last night.

Grant, who was last in charge of Partizan Belgrade, believes Chelsea need to carry on winning in order to convince the club's supporters Benitez is the man for the job.

"Any win is good and what Rafa needs now is good wins and good football to convince the supporters that they need to support him," he said.

"It’s not easy times for Chelsea. It’s the first time they’re out of the Champions League at this stage and the gap between them and first place in the Premier League is huge. I think he needs it and they need it.

"Supporters are supporters and it is very difficult to change them unless you’re winning games, but the club have to do it (support him) on a daily basis. I think that is most important, to give him a bit of quiet."
