Arsene Wenger 'wrong not to shake hands'

Arsene Wenger's decision not to shake hands with Mark Hughes has been called into question by other managers.

Hughes said the Arsenal manager snubbed him after the Manchester City chief strayed into Wenger's technical area during last night's Carling Cup quarter-final.

Wenger's mood would not have been helped by his team's poor performance in the 3-0 defeat at Eastlands but fellow Premier League bosses Gary Megson and Tony Pulis both believe the Frenchman should have shown more respect.

Bolton boss Megson said: "In my view you can do whatever you want, say whatever you like during the game but after the game, you should shake hands, even if you don't mean it.

"You should shake hands because people are watching and will draw their own conclusions if you don't.

"I don't think that is particularly good on Arsene's part and I think he has done it before. What we have to do as managers is realise that, although it might not be a great big thing that someone doesn't shake hands with another, the impact is huge, so everybody should do it."

Wenger has clashed with managers before on the touchline in his 13 years at Arsenal, most notably Alan Pardew, when he was at West Ham; Sam Allardyce during his Bolton days; Martin Jol at Spurs and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Stoke chief Pulis believes the emotion of the game makes it hard for managers to keep in control but they should try.

He said: "Arsene Wenger has made a decision not to shake Mark Hughes's hand, whether that is right or wrong you'd have to ask him.

"But personally, whether I like or dislike someone, you have a responsibility to show the right spirit of the game.

"And whether you disagreed with Mark being outside of his technical area at one stage, in the spirit of the game you should still shake hands."
