Arsene Wenger has described how Arsenal can nullify the 'outstanding' threat of Robert Lewandowski during tonight's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.

The Poland striker has started the season in superb form and scored 16 goals in 11 appearances to help fire Pep Guardiola's side to the top of their group.

Lewandowski will need to be stopped at the Emirates Stadium if Wenger's side are to claim a positive result and the French manager is adamant that his defenders need to be on top of their game to stifle the 27-year-old.

"The best way for us to combat Lewandowski is for us to have the ball.

"After that, we have to be shrewd with him because inside the box he is outstanding. His technique, his movement and his finishing is top class.

"That's where we will need all the experience of defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny to deal with that.

The Gunners have endured a difficult start to their European campaign and the club's hopes of progression are in doubt after defeats to both Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos.

Back-to-back fixtures against the Bundesliga champions is a daunting prospect but Wenger believes his team can take heart from their previous performances against the Bavarians.

"We have played Bayern teams who are at least as good as this one and beaten them.

"We beat the one that won the treble with [Franck] Ribery, [Arjen] Robben, [Toni] Kroos, [Bastian] Schweinsteiger and [Thomas] Muller at full power.

"There is no team in the world without weaknesses but it is realistic to say we have to win at least one of our next two games. And that might not be enough."
