Arsene Wenger close to decision on defender Stefan Savic

11 April 2012

Arsene Wenger will decide today whether to sign Stefan Savic after arranging a behind-closed-doors friendly to assess the Montenegro Under-21 defender.

The 19-year-old centre-back will end a 10-day trial with the Gunners tomorrow before returning to his current club, BSK Borca, of Serbia.

Wenger is keen to add defensive cover after losing out to Manchester United in the race to sign Chris Smalling from Fulham last week and Savic is thought to be available for as little as £2million.

But although Savic believes a deal is done, Wenger is not yet convinced of his potential.

"There were offers from Tottenham and Birmingham but I had no more doubts," said Savic, who can sign a pre-contract agreement now ahead of a move in the summer.
