Arsene Wenger believes “justice has been done” by Kieran Gibbs returning to action for England.

The 25-year-old earned only his fourth senior cap in last night’s 5-0 win over San Marino at Wembley.

It is reward for Gibbs’s perseverance having endured a career blighted by a series of serious injury setbacks.

Gibbs made his debut as a half-time substitute in a 2-1 win against Hungary on August 2010 and played again in November that year in a home defeat to France under former manager Fabio Capello.

However, he had to wait until November 2013 for further international recognition as a second-half substitute against Germany before starting last night’s game as he bids to rival Leighton Baines as England’s first-choice left-back.

England v San Marino: Player Ratings

1/14

“I like it and there’s nobody more happy than me to see him [in the England team again],” said Gunners boss Wenger. “I always trusted Kieran to have that in his locker and to see that he finally gets his chance again is great news for me.

“I think mentally he has made a step forward in the last month, by taking more responsibility and by showing his huge potential.

“It’s all there for Kieran and I believe that everybody at the club thinks it’s justice done that he’s back in the national team.”
