Arsene Wenger expects Arsenal to continue their fine run of form in their crucial next game as they welcome fellow title-challengers Manchester City to the Emirates.

The Gunners moved top of the table with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey netting in the first half to continue their own recent impressive runs.

Arsenal currently sit a point above City, with whom they are expected to do battle with for the Premier League title. And a run of three consecutive victories has convinced Wenger that his side are in the perfect position for next Monday’s match.

“Manchester City next week is a big game, but we are mentally good and we will prepare well to win this game,” he told Sky Sports after the Villa match.

Crucial to Arsenal’s recent renaissance, coming after a November in which they took just two points from three league games, has been the form of Olivier Giroud.

The 29-year-old claimed his fourth goal of the week from the penalty spot early in Sunday’s victory and Wenger was glowing in his praise for his forward.

“He is at the top of his game,” the manager said in the post-match press conference. “The numbers get people to realise he is a good player.”
