The imminent capture of goalkeeper Petr Cech may already have landed Arsenal the signing of the summer, according to Harry Redknapp.
Arsene Wenger’s reputation as an operator in the transfer market was restored by the capture last year of £35m Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona. By common consent, it was the smartest piece of business pulled off in the window this time last year.
Now, with 33-year-old Cech’s switch from Chelsea nearing completion, Redknapp said: “What a fantastic signing he will be. Now they will have a truly great goalkeeper – and that’s a big start in any season.
“Look at what is already out there in front of him – Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Sanchez
“You’d think already that Cech will be the capture of the summer.
“Arsenal are really not far away from having a team which could have a real go for the title this time.
“If they get a centre half, a holding midfielder and another striker to go with Olivier Giroud, they will be flying.”
All three domestic prizes landed in London last season – with Chelsea winning the title and the League Cup and Arsenal winning the FA Cup for the second successive season.
Former Spurs, West Ham and QPR boss Redknapp added: “Right now, it looks like the champions will come out of London again next season. It will be Chelsea or Arsenal, unless Manchester City really improve and really spend. Both those London clubs look stronger than Manchester United. Tottenham can have a go for the top four. And West Ham can finish in the top half.”
