Arsenal were this afternoon left scrambling to complete a second loan deal after negotiations stalled over a move for Yannick Carrasco.

Emery is keen to add another winger to his squad before tonight’s deadline and Carrasco had emerged as the most likely candidate after a deal for Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic hit the buffers.

The Italian club had insisted they receive a £35million fee this month but Arsenal are only pursuing loan deals for the time being as they are reluctant to commit a significant portion of their summer budget now.

The Gunners had been offered Carrasco earlier in the window but pursued other options only to revive their interest in recent days.

The 25-year-old’s club, Dalian Yifang, were open to allowing him to leave on loan if they found a suitable replacement but that search has faltered and Carrasco looked this lunchtime most likely to stay in China.

Arsenal remain in contact with Paris Saint-Germain about Christopher Nkunku. The 21-year-old midfielder played 43 times under Emery during their time together in Paris and, once again, the Gunners have explored the possibility of an initial loan with a view to buy.
