Arsenal are hopeful Aaron Ramsey will be fit for their match with Newcastle a week today after he withdrew from Wales duty due to a thigh injury.

The midfielder had been set to play for Wales in their opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia on Sunday.

However, Ramsey was forced to withdraw from Ryan Giggs’ squad on Saturday due to a problem with his left thigh.

The midfielder has now returned to Arsenal and he will be assessed by the club ahead of their next match, which is against Newcastle at home a week today.

The hope is, however, that the 28-year-old will be fit for that match as the issue with his thigh was related to tightness - and not a strain or tear.

Ramsey’s Arsenal team-mates are currently at a training camp in Dubai and they are due to face Al-Nasr Dubai SC in a friendly on Tuesday.

The Gunners have taken a strong squad to the United Arab Emirates, with the likes of Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil making the trip.

One player who did not travel is left-back Nacho Monreal, but his omission is merely due to precaution as the club monitors tightness in his calf.
