Arsenal's Henrikh Mkhitaryan joins AS Roma on loan for 2019-20 season

Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan has joined AS Roma on loan for the rest of the season.

Mkhitaryan, who moved to the Emirates Stadium in January 2018 from Manchester United, made 59 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring nine goals.

A club statement read: "Everyone at Arsenal wishes Micki all the best for his season with Roma. The loan is subject to the completion of regulatory processes."

Mkhitaryan was part of the swap deal which saw Alexis Sanchez move to Old Trafford.

With Sanchez having joined Inter Milan on loan for rest of the campaign, Mkhitaryan's exit draws a line under the deal failed to work out for any of the parties involved.

Sanchez and Mkhitaryan struggled to impressive for United and Arsenal respectively, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Unai Emery both deciding that they would be better served by getting the two players' significant salaries off their wage bills and instead offer opportunities to younger squad members.

Mason Greenwood will be handed significantly more game time at United, while Reiss Nelson can expect more chances to impress in attacking midfield for Arsenal.
