Alexandre Lacazette has lauded the character of his Arsenal teammates after Thursday’s tight 1-0 win at Wolves.

The Gunners went in a goal to the good at the break thanks to Gabriel’s close-range finish, after Lacazette had beaten Jose Sa to the ball from a recycled corner. But Gabriel Martinelli’s red card with 20 minutes to go made it a nervy finish.

Nevertheless, Arsenal held on with some stout defending to go within a point of fourth-placed West Ham, with two games in hand.

After his first game as full-time club captain, Lacazette credited his side’s defending at Molineux.

“We really wanted to win this game,” he told BT Sport. “We were a bit disappointed after Burnley so we used the break to work a lot.

“I think today we showed a lot of positive things for the rest of the season.

“It is stressful to watch this kind of game, because we are 10 against 11 but it’s a part of football and I’m proud of my team because we handled it well. We were strong.

“It’s not easy, Wolves have good quality in the box and I’m proud of them because defensively we were strong and everyone at the back did their job.”
