Arsenal’s may not be eliminated if they lose to Bayern Munich at the Emirates, but they can ill-afford a third successive Champions League defeat.

Yet they will have done exceptionally well if they achieve anything but a loss against Europe’s most formidable side. Pep Guardiola’s men have been unstoppable against all they have come against in league and Europe, hitting five past Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg.

In Robert Lewandowski they possess the most in-form striker in Europe, with a scoring record to rival Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. And behind him are World Cup and Champions League winners such as Philipp Lahm, Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer.

Arsene Wenger could not have wished for better preparation than the back-to-back 3-0 wins over Manchester United and Watford either side of the international break. But this could be a far greater challenge for the Gunners?

What they’re saying

Wenger: “We have the needed belief and confidence that we are doing something right so that helps.

"We maybe could be a little suspected of not taking the first two games seriously enough but this time that is not the threat.

“Let’s take the positives of our Premier League [form] and as well get the right focus that you get when you play a big opponent.”

Lahm: “Anybody who knows about football also knows that Arsenal are better than the way they have started this season in Europe, with two defeats.

“They have got some very, very dangerous individuals and certainly it is not going to be easy, but we are ready. We take all of our opponents seriously, otherwise you don't win nine games in a row in the Bundesliga.”

Match odds (William Hill)

Bayern are odds-on to triumph at the Emirates, priced at 5/6 whilst the hosts have notably long odds of 14/5. The draw is 3/1.
