Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed the club are close to making a new signing following Saturday's draw with Leicester.

The Gunners drew a blank as they fought out a goalless draw with Premier League champions Leicester to leave them five points of pace-setters Chelsea and Manchester United after two matches.

Wenger has added Granit Xhaka, Takuma Asano and Rob Holding to his squad over the summer months, but has been otherwise frustrated in his pursuit of further additions.

With long-term injuries he is keen to recruit a central defensive option ahead of deadline day and has identified Valencia's Shkodran Mustafi as his primary target.

A striker also remains high on the Frenchman's wishlist after failed summer moves for Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette.

And the 66-year-old confirmed he was closing in on another signing.

"Yes we are close," he told BT Sport. "But I would say spending in itself is not a quality. Spending and buying the right players is a quality.

"I am a bit fed up to always respond to the same things. We look and analyse absolutely everything and we have to make the right decisions.

"What matters is that the end of a month we make sure that a club that has 600 employees can pay them all. That is the most important thing.

"Afterwards if you have the money to spend £300 million you can do it. But at the end of the month you have to respect everyone who works for the club."
