Arsene Wenger has warned that "change is not always the answer" as he looks to build a title-winning squad for next season.

With Arsenal having briefly emerged as Chelsea's biggest title rivals during March and April, Wenger has seen real improvements in his side. However, the French manager warned that the solution to Arsenal's problems is not always found in the transfer market.

The Gunners have been linked with Petr Cech, Morgan Schneiderlin and Paulo Dybala however the Frenchman noticed how his London rivals benefited from a settled squad.

"We spoke about Chelsea. They have a stable defence that has played together for two or three years now and they conceded less goals than the other teams," Wenger said. "That is no coincidence. Every team needs a good spine, but change is not always the answer to everything.

"You can always look at possible areas where you can strengthen but sometimes in your own team the cohesion is important as well. And that is linked to the type of players that play together."

Whatever decisions Arsenal make in the transfer window it is likely that their rivals for Champions League places will strengthen, as Wenger admitted.

He added: "We don't know how strong Man City and Man United will be when we get to the end of the transfer window. You expect them to respond, as well as Liverpool, so we can't say what standard will be needed next season.

"People are always having good ideas of where we can strengthen, but when you look at who it may be to come in, it's much more difficult."
