Arsenal should change sport if they lose out on the Premier League title to Tottenham or Leicester this season, according to former midfielder Emmanuel Petit.

The Gunners started the campaign promisingly but have struggled for form during the second half of the season.

Arsene Wenger's side are now languishing in third place and trail leaders Leicester by 11 points with just seven games left to play.

The north Londoners have not won the title in 12 years and Petit, who was speaking prior to Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton on Saturday, is adamant they cannot afford to fail against two surprise contenders.

"We let down the fans, we let down the club because this year was for us. For us," Petit told Soccer Saturday.

“Do you think Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United will do the same next year? Forget it. They will come back strongly.

"So if this year you cannot compete with Spurs, with all the respect I have for them, and Leicester, then change your sport. I’m sorry,” said the Frenchman.

Wenger believes his side are not yet out of the title race, given that they have a 'mathematical' chance of overturning the Foxes' lead, but anything less than a first-place finish come the end of the season will see serious questions asked at the Emirates.
