Kieran Tierney insists there is still a ‘long way’ to go as Arsenal push for Champions League return

Kieran Tierney says Arsenal will keep their feet on the ground and not get ahead of themselves in the race for Champions League qualification.

Arsenal currently sit in the Premier League’s top four and a 5-0 victory over Norwich on Boxing Day means they are six points clear of Tottenham in fifth.

Spurs, however, have three games in hand on Arsenal, who will also not be in action on Tuesday after their match with Wolves was postponed due to the Midlands side having a Covid-19 outbreak.

Arsenal’s push for Champions League qualification has shocked many after they started the season with three defeats, and Tierney has insisted the squad won’t get carried away.

“It’s obviously what every Arsenal fan, player and staff wants, but there is a long way to go,” said the left-back, when asked about finishing in the top four.

“We can’t get too ahead of ourselves yet. There are big games coming up and there are a lot of games coming, so there’s still a long way [to go].

“We are getting a run together. We are happy, we are playing well and we are scoring goals. We are getting there. It was good [today].

“We have got a very young team and it’s brilliant to see. Hopefully for years to come we are all playing together and growing together. I think you can see that over the last year or so.”

Arsenal were in impressive form at Carrow Road and they have now scored 19 goals in their last five games.

Bukayo Saka got them off to a flying start against Norwich, while Tierney struck before the break too.

Saka got his second after half-time, with Alexandre Lacazette and Emile Smith Rowe completing the win late on.

“I am always happy to score and I think it was quite an important time to get the second as well, just before half-time. I am buzzing obviously,” Tierney added.

Arsenal have plenty of big games coming up, including Manchester City on New Year’s Day and then Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

And asked if their form can give them confidence going into those big games, Tierney said: “That’s the aim.

“We want to be the best we can every day and we are building to there. I think people can see over the last few months that we are getting better.

“We are getting more consistent. We are scoring more goals as well, so we just need to keep going in that direction.”
