Mohamed Elneny has promised to "fight" to put smiles back on Arsenal fans' faces after responding to images of a young Gunners supporter in tears at the EFL Cup final.

Arsenal were soundly beaten 3-0 by Manchester City in Sunday's EFL Cup final at Wembley, with goals from Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva ending the match as a contest with 25 minutes remaining.

Following Silva's goal, Sky Sports cameras cut to a young Arsenal fan in tears in the Wembley stands - an image which went viral on social media.

Gary Neville - on co-commentary duty for the match - called Arsenal's players "spineless", saying: "Look at that [child crying], that's what you caused. They're just walking around the football pitch."

The defeat leaves the Europa League as Arsenal's only realistic chance of silverware this season, with the Gunners' hopes of Champions League qualification also riding on Europa glory as they sit sixth in the Premier League.

Elneny was an unused substitute for the final, but took to Twitter to pledge that he and his team-mates will strive to improve as their season unravels.

The Egyptian midfielder posted a picture of the distraught Arsenal fan with the caption: "Listen, your tears are so precious for all of us.

"For the sake of you and the sake of all the gunners’ fans I promise you to fight to draw the smile on your face."

Elneny and Arsenal have a chance to make amends against City immediately, with Pep Guardiola's table-toppers heading to Emirates Stadium for Thursday night's Premier League clash in north London.
