Arsenal injury crisis: Six midfield candidates for Arsene Wenger in the January transfer window

Arsene Wenger has admitted he will consider signings in the January transfer window as his Arsenal side endure their annual injury crisis.

But as ever with the manager, it comes with a pretty significant caveat. With Francis Coquelin set for an absence of at least two months, and Mikel Arteta joining him on the sidelines, Wenger has just Mathieu Flamini in his defensive midfield ranks until January.

As to whether he will make a move for another body in January: “"I will do what is needed in January knowing that it is not an ideal market.”

Considering the disappointing returns of the summer transfer window, in which only Petr Cech joined, the prospects of Wenger conjuring up a player that would improve his squad during the January transfer window seem slim at best.

There are, though, players who could be available in January – particularly if Wenger is willing to pay a premium. It may be unlikely, but Arsenal might have no choice if they want to maintain a title challenge that is in danger of falling apart.
