Arsenal take on Everton this weekend and they can take heart from the fact that they have beaten their opponents on more occasions than any other team in English footballing history.

Should Arsene Wenger’s side pick up the win on Saturday it would represent a record 92nd victory over the Toffees in 189 meetings, more than any other side has picked up against one team.

Sky Sports have analysed every single one of the 190,663 matches in English league history to examine which side each club has beaten and lost to the most often.

There is little surprise for Arsenal fans in the identity of the team to have beaten them most, a record held by Manchester United. On 80 occasions the Gunners have found themselves on the losing side against their great rivals.

They can at least take solace from the fact that they are the bogey team for both United and their Manchester neighbours, having won 68 times against United and 86 times against City.

Tottenham are another team to have regularly suffered at the hands of the English league’s most successful side, having lost a 78 times to United. They are one of several top-flight regulars to have had their greatest success against Aston Villa, who they have beaten 60 times.

Villa are rather the whipping boys among English footballing giants, as Everton, Liverpool, Newcastle and Man United have claimed their record number of wins against the Midlands side. The first of those should be of little surprise as Aston Villa vs Everton is the most regular fixture in English football, having taken place 201 times.

Chelsea hold their win record against Sunderland (58) and have been defeated 65 times by Liverpool, who emerged as one of their major rivals during the tenures of Rafael Benitez and Jose Mourinho.

Crystal Palace and Norwich City may not be the most obvious of rivalries but when it comes to encounters between the Eagles and the Canaries it is almost neck-and-neck. The 3-1 victory for Alan Pardew's team on the opening day of the season gave them a 44-43 advantage in the head-to-head between the two teams.

It's even closer between QPR and Watford, each of whom have beaten the other 48 times.
