Mikel Arteta gives verdict on Arsenal strikers amid calls to make January signing

Gunners boss not concerned that no attacker has bagged a huge goal haul

Mikel Arteta says he is comfortable with his forwards sharing the goals, amid calls for Arsenal to sign a new striker.

The Gunners are prepared to bolster their squad in January, with Arteta confirming on Wednesday that the club are ready to act if the right deal presents itself.

There have been calls for Arsenal to target a new striker and Arteta has said he wants more goals from his forwards. But the Spaniard has also stated that he is happy with the fact that the goals are being shared around, instead of being reliant on one player.

Bukayo Saka stands top of the club's scoresheet with eight goals, ahead of Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus on seven apiece. Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard follow, on six, before Kai Havertz (five) and Gabriel Martinelli (four).

“I would love for us to score five goals every week, you know,” Arteta said.

“I would prefer that those goals are shared because I think it is more probable that this is going to be consistently maintainable. This is what we have done.

“The amount of goals we share in the squad is really positive. We want more goals. We want more goals from our strikers, that is for sure. I think we have got them within the team.

“I am very happy. Would I like that Gabi, Eddie, Leo score 50 goals? Yes, for sure.

“Every manager would want a player that can score 50 goals guaranteed every season. But if you don’t have it, it means as well that they have other qualities that empower the qualities of the players next to them. That is really important as well.

“I think there are players, and we have players, that can score. Last year they did something that not many wingers or attacking midfielders did in the league. It is our job to try to improve them and get the best out of them.”
