Arsenal confirm Arsene Wenger has signed new contract to extend his 20-year stay
Arsene Wenger has signed a new contract to extend his spell as Arsenal manager, the club have confirmed.
As Standard Sport confirmed on Tuesday, Wenger has agreed to stay on as the club's manager just days after guiding Arsenal to a record 13th FA Cup win, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley.
Wenger will remain in control of team affairs and player recruitment, but has agreed to minor tweaks to the way in which the club operates.
The deal may not be his last at Arsenal; Standard Sport understands there is no break clause in the two-year agreement and neither party has suggested the Frenchman will step aside when the new deal expires in 2019.
The Frenchman, who took charge of Arsenal on October 1 1996, has extended his spell in north London despite the ongoing protests against his reign from a section of the club’s supporters.
Wenger has spent much of the season avoiding questions about his future, which has been up for greater debate than at any time yet during his reign after a season in which Arsenal have struggled to keep up with their top six rivals.
Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage for the seventh year in a row and were out of the title race before the season had entered its denouement, a familiar tale for frustrated supporters.
Wenger has won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups, the most by any manager in English footballing history, during his time at Arsenal but his last league triumph came in 2003-04, the season when his ‘Invincibles’ went through the entire league campaign undefeated.
