Arsenal have cancelled this summer's Emirates Cup pre-season tournament to allow for pitch reconstruction at the stadium.

An extended European Championships has already eaten into preparation for the next Premier League season, which kicks off on August 13, with Arsenal set to travel to America during their pre-season.

Renovation of the pitch will begin immediately after the final home game of this campaign, against Aston Villa on May 15, and continue throughout the summer.

Chief executive Ivan Gazidis said: “We know how popular the Emirates Cup is with our fans here in the UK and around the world, so we are disappointed that we will not be hosting it this summer. The shorter pre-season window and the need to relay our pitch has resulted in this decision being taken. We look forward to hosting the tournament in 2017.”

The Emirates Cup has run since 2007 but was also cancelled in 2012 due to the Summer Olympics in London.

Arsenal won last summer's event, the fourth occasion they have lifted the trophy, winning both their matches against Lyon and Wolfsburg, scoring seven and conceding no goals.
