Arsene Wenger has lambasted Liverpool for their decision to sack Brendan Rodgers, labelling the decision irrational.

Just 18 months after the club came within two points of their first title win since 1990 owners Fenway Sports Group decided to remove their manager, who has since been replaced by Jurgen Klopp.

A run of just three wins in their opening eight league games cost Rodgers his job but Wenger believes the decision to sack Rodgers was rushed.

“I think when you lose your job in life, we all have jobs, it’s difficult you know,” the Arsenal manager told BeIn Sports.

“And on top of that after eight games it’s very, very difficult because if you start well and you have a bad moment during the season, people forgive you but if you start wrong straight away you are questioned and that’s what happened to Brendan Rodgers.

“Let’s not forget Liverpool has not won the championship since 1991 [sic]. They won 18 championships and since ‘91 they have not won the championship, came the closest to winning it two years ago and now I don’t know why really, the rational reasons why they have made that decision so quickly. It’s difficult for me to understand.”

Wenger had also offered his support to Rodgers in the immediate aftermath of his sacking, which was announced less than an hour after Arsenal had defeated Manchester United.

The manager believes that the result could be a vital one in the season ahead.

“It was significant on two fronts,” he added. First of all, we had a very disappointing result three days before against Olympiacos and of course that was a huge shock.

“Secondly it was for us an opportunity to get two points behind the leader, level with Manchester United, to beat them, and on top of that, the third, in recent years we have not beaten United in Championship so on three fronts it was a vital win for us.”
