Arsenal began their defence of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Hull at Emirates Stadium.

Per Mertesacker scored the opening goal after 21 minutes to give the home side an advantage they never looked like surrendering in a meandering affair, diluted by 15 changes in total with the Gunners making five alterations to the team that lost 2-0 at Southampton.

Speaking after the match, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger warned fans to be patient with Theo Walcott, who made his first start for exactly a year following injury.

“You cannot expect much but fitness-wise he was good," said Wenger.

"He had good chances, made some good runs. He has to get used to contact again and that will take a little bit of time. Overall it was a positive first game.

“It’s a very important period now. We’ve had many injuries until now and hopefully everybody will be back.”
