Arsenal 2 Crystal Palace 0: Olivier Giroud goal in Arsene Wenger's top five favourite strikes of his reign

Arsene Wenger says that Olivier Giroud’s scorpion kick goal ranks in the top five he has witnessed as Arsenal manager.

Giroud’s backheel volley in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace set social media alight with extensive debate over whether the Frenchman’s was better than a similar goal Henrikh Mkhitaryan had scored for Manchester United six days earlier.

Over 20 years at Arsenal Wenger has worked with some of the best strikers in the history of the Premier League and had a touchline view of a string of great goals.

Yet it is no surprise that Wenger ranks Giroud’s spectacular volley, which came after a flowing move from attack to defence, on a par with the best of Dennis Bergkamp, whose goal against Newcastle in 2002 was voted the second best in Premier League history in 2002, Thierry Henry and Kanu.

“I’ve been spoiled in my career, I had many great players and many great strikers. [Giroud’s goal is] certainly in the top five.

Listing his favourites Wenger said: “I remember Bergkamp, Henry with special goals.

“Bergkamp at Leicester, Newcastle. Thierry Henry at Real Madrid, Liverpool. Kanu at Chelsea. It’s difficult for me not to forget goals over 20 years.

“When you score 70, 80 a year by now that makes 1,600 goals. It’s difficult to get the best five.”
